Specific Features of the Spread of Tuberculosis in Russia at the End of the 20th Century

Abstract: This study shows the dynamics of the epidemiological process over the last decade and presents the causes of the deterioration in TB control. Explanations are given for the TB mortality rate increase, the trustworthiness of the data, and the factors influencing its formation. The present-day TB epidemiological situation in Russia is characterized by an increase in exogenous infection. Peaks of epidemiological deterioration were registered in 1993 and 1999. Marked deterioration of the epidemiological situation … Show more

“…To improve treatment outcome of TB patients and hence to achieve country wise milestone goals, understanding the attributable factors for TB mortality and identifying mortality determinants remain indispensable to find out strategies and interventions to solve the problem. Accordingly, deterioration in TB healthcare services and increase in MDR and XRD resistances were facilitators of mortality due to TB [ 4 , 5 ]. On the other hand, antiretroviral therapy (ART), cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT), and type of TB diagnosis were found to be predictors of TB mortality [ 6 ].…”

“…TB mortality has been variously attributed to a dramatic rise in drug resistance [6] and to deteriorations in TB services [7,8] and the risk of dying could be reduced through improved care [9,10]. So to avert the problem of TB mortality, policy makers should devise a plan, with clear reflection on the magnitude of mortality and associated risks factors of TB, to improve the quality and standard of TB care.…”

“…There are studies available that have analyzed factors associated to death from tuberculosis as the underlying cause and as a result found predictors of death conditions related to the deterioration of health services, increased resistance to TB, use of antiretroviral therapy, cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT), and type of TB diagnosis [5,6]. Thus, existing knowledge points out that risk factors are related to the occurrence of TB, and the sociodemographic and structural characteristics of services in the region.…”
