“…Aluminum accumulates in the brain and bones of renal patients on dialysis and has been related to neurodegenerative processes [41]. In an attempt to understand aluminum intoxication, a fast protein LC method was developed to identify the aluminum carrier and/or storage in the human blood.…”

“…In an attempt to understand aluminum intoxication, a fast protein LC method was developed to identify the aluminum carrier and/or storage in the human blood. Isolation of serum aluminum bound to high molecular weight proteins is achieved using a size-exclusion column on a fast protein LC system and applying the protein portion to a weak anion-exchange convective-interaction media (CIM) diethylamine (DEAE) fast-monolithic disk with an analytical run time of 10 min [41]. It was found that $90% of the aluminum is bound to proteins, of which 97% is tranferrin [41].…”

“…Murko et al [25] developed a new analytical procedure using a CIM DEAE disk with ICP -MS detection for the speciation of high molecular mass (HMM) Al species in spiked human serum. Special problems in speciation of Al in biological samples are low serum Al concentrations and contamination by extraneous Al.…”

“…In addition, special attention should be devoted to cleaning the disk support. The robustness and chemical stability of methacrylate-based monoliths [27] allowed rigorous cleaning with 1 mol/L NaOH and 2 mol/L citric acid [25], which efficiently remove Al from the chromatographic support. Considering also the efficient cleaning of reagents used in the chromatographic procedure the overall blank was lowered to below 0.5 ng Al/mL, and was similar to that obtained for speciation of Al in spiked human serum by applying anion-exchange FPLC -ETAAS [29].…”
