Strategic interactions arise in all domains of life. This form of competition often plays out in dynamically changing environments. The strategies employed in a population may alter the state of the environment, which may in turn feedback to change the incentive structure of strategic interactions. Feedbacks between strategies and the environment are common in social-ecological systems, evolutionary-ecological systems, and even psychological-economic systems. Here we develop a framework of 'eco-evolutionary game theory' that enables the study of strategic and environmental dynamics with feedbacks. We consider environments governed either by intrinsic growth, decay, or tipping points. We show how the joint dynamics of strategies and the environment depend on the incentives for individuals to lead or follow behavioral changes, and on the relative speed of environmental versus strategic change. Our analysis unites dynamical phenomena that occur in settings as diverse as human decision-making, plant nutrient acquisition, and resource harvesting. We discuss implications in fields ranging from ecology to economics.

Marine microbial primary production is influenced by the availability and uptake of essential nutrients, including iron. Although marine microbes have evolved mechanisms to scavenge sub-nanomolar concentrations of iron, recent observations suggest that viruses may co-opt these very same mechanisms to facilitate infection. The "Ferrojan Horse Hypothesis" proposes that viruses incorporate iron atoms into their tail fiber proteins to adsorb to target host receptors. Here, we propose an evolutionary game theoretic approach to consider the joint strategies of hosts and viruses in environments with limited nutrients (like iron). We analyze the bimatrix game and find that evolutionarily stable strategies depend on the stability and quality of nutrient conditions. For example, in highly stable iron conditions, virus pressure does not change host uptake strategies. However, when iron levels are dynamic, virus pressure can lead to fluctuations in the extent to which hosts invest in metabolic machinery that increases both iron uptake and susceptibility to viral infection. Altogether, this evolutionary game model provides further evidence that viral infection and nutrient dynamics jointly shape the fate of microbial populations.

Statistical mechanics is based on the interplay between energy and entropy. Here we formalize this interplay via axiomatic bargaining theory (a branch of cooperative game theory), where entropy and negative energy are represented by utilities of two different players. Game-theoretic axioms provide a solution to the thermalization problem, which is complementary to existing physical approaches. We predict thermalization of a nonequilibrium statistical system employing the axiom of affine covariance, related to the freedom of changing initial points and dimensions for entropy and energy, together with the contraction invariance of the entropy-energy diagram. Thermalization to negative temperatures is allowed for active initial states. Demanding a symmetry between players determines the final state to be the Nash solution (well known in game theory), whose derivation is improved as a by-product of our analysis. The approach helps to retrodict nonequilibrium predecessors of a given equilibrium state.
