Spatial Interactions and Oscillatory Tragedies of the Commons

Abstract: A tragedy of the commons (TOC) occurs when individuals acting in their own self-interest deplete commonly-held resources, leading to a worse outcome than had they cooperated. Over time, the depletion of resources can change incentives for subsequent actions. Here, we investigate longterm feedback between game and environment across a continuum of incentives in an individualbased framework. We identify payoff-dependent transition rules that lead to oscillatory TOC-s in stochastic simulations and the mean field … Show more

“…Spatially structured interactions, and more generally, network structured interactions among individuals can fundamentally alter predictions about the strategies that will be successful in a system, but it is not well known what effects such structured interactions will have on a system where strategies and the environment are coupled. Recent work suggests that it could lead to environmental heterogeneity and the simultaneous support of many strategies with differing environmental and strategic consequences 44 .…”

“…In addition, the present model does not take into account the effects of spatial heterogeneity on dynamics. Previous research in ecological games shows that local interactions can have qualitative impacts on model behavior, such as stabilizing coexistence or inducing limit cycles [39,40]. Studies in aquatic environments also show the importance of spatial heterogeneity for microbial community composition [41], gene expression [42], and viral populations [43].…”

“…Cooperative game theory tries to predict the possible outcome of the game, where the formation of coalitions (a group of players who behave as an entity) and/or external enforcement mechanisms are accepted [8][9][10][21][22][23][24][25]. One of the points of cooperative games is that joint actions of players are allowed.…”
