Spatial ecology of river otters in a human-modified landscape

Abstract: River otter populations have expanded across much of their historical range, including in Illinois where they were reintroduced from 1994 to 1997. These expanding populations are recolonizing a wide range of landscapes with different levels of human modification, which could influence how river otters use space in relation to habitat characteristics and each other. Our objectives were to quantify 1) home ranges and core areas, 2) sociality, and 3) habitat selection across all available habitats and within home… Show more

“…We provide insight and recommendations regarding Comstock traps as a live-capture method for river otters. Given a recent focus on river otter conservation, especially in the Midwest where populations have rebounded from historic lows during the 20th century (Nielsen 2016;Rutter et al 2018;Hanrahan et al 2019;Holland et al 2019), we believe that our findings are applicable to those considering alternative methods to live-capture river otters for research purposes.…”

“…We measured the functionality of a new design of box trap called a Comstock Custom Cage trap (Comstock Custom Cage LLC, Gansevoort, NY) (hereafter, ''Comstock trap'') to capture river otters for a radio telemetry study (Rutter et al 2018;Hanrahan et al 2019). Comstock traps differ from other cage-type live traps in that they include a suspended wire trigger mechanism rather than a traditional foot treadle and spring-powered doors.…”

“…Aseptic technique was maintained throughout all procedures and no obvious external signs of infection were detected in any river otters during post‐release monitoring. River otters displayed normal movement patterns post release (T. Gettelman, Southern Illinois University, unpublished data; Hanrahan et al 2019).…”

“…Monthly temperatures during November–March 2018–2020 ranged from −17.8°C to 26.1°C and averaged 3.6°C (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration 2020). Further description of our study area can be found elsewhere (Rutter et al 2018, Hanrahan et al 2019, Rutter et al 2020).…”
