Spanish late Pliocene and early Pleistocene hominid, palaeolithic and faunal finds from Orce (Granada) and Cueva Victoria (Murcia)

“…In VM, three fragmentary bone specimens (skull cap VM-0, humeral diaphysis VM-1960 and distal humerus VM-3691) have been attributed to the genus Homo (Gibert et al, , 1998(Gibert et al, , 1999aGibert and Palmqvist, 1995;Lowenstein et al, 1999). However, the human affinities of these fossils have been seriously questioned and none of them is now accepted as unequivocally human (Palmqvist, 1997;Moyà-Solà and Köhler, 1997;Martínez-Navarro, 2002;Palmqvist et al, 2005).…”

“…The wealth of hominid remains, which have been assigned to a proposed new species, Homo antecessor, are dated to about 0.8 mya. In the south of Spain, at Venta Micena, Fuente Nueva and elsewhere near Orce and Murcia, stone objects have been identified as artefacts and manuports (Gibert et al 1989(Gibert et al , 1992Roe, 1995) and some scanty, probable hominid skeletal remains, have been recovered. They have been dated to about 1.5 mya (Agusti, Oms and Parrs, 1999).…”
