Traditionally, ultrasound in physical therapy is used as a therapeutic agent for pain relief, tissue healing, and as an adjuvant treatment in promoting soft tissue repair. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UB), a relatively new technique, can be used to diagnose soft tissue injuries. The use of UB to diagnose tendon and dermal injuries, along with pressure ulcers is described. In clinical settings where evidence-based medicine is essential to providing state of the art care and seeking third-party re-imbursement, tools such as UB are invaluable for their assistance with objective and reliable evidence of injury or progression toward healing due to physical therapy interventions.
