Sonographically demonstrated intra-amniotic hemorrhage following transplacental genetic amniocentesis. Frequency, sonographic appearance, and clinical significance.

Abstract: Over a 9‐month period, 11 transplacental amniocenteses were performed. Following completion of amniocentesis, intra‐amniotic hemorrhage occurred in all 11 cases. Amniotic masses and intra‐amniotic strands occurred in three cases as a result of intra‐amniotic hemorrhage. The 11 pregnancies in which transplacental amniocentesis were performed were uncomplicated, and they resulted in normal infants. Transplacental amniocentesis can yield unusual sonographic appearances but does not appear to have an adverse effec… Show more

“…Blood contamination was significantly higher when transplacental amniocentesis was performed [17] . Chinn et al [18] also observed higher blood contamination estimated by ultrasound in transplacental amniocentesis. Amniotic fluid contamination with maternal cells is observed in up to 85% of transplacental procedures, and in 10% when the placenta is posterior [19] .…”

“…Intra-amniotic hemorrhages can be the result of an amniocentesis [ 1 ] or bleeding from the placenta [ 2 ], or can occur spontaneously [ 3 ]. The most frequently performed procedure that is a cause of intra-amniotic bleeding is amniocentesis [ 4 ].…”

“…The most frequently performed procedure that is a cause of intra-amniotic bleeding is amniocentesis [ 4 ]. A study reported that If the amniocentesis involves the passage of a needle through the placenta, then the risk of intra-amniotic bleeding was 100% [ 1 ]. An amniocentesis may be useful in helping make the diagnosis of an intra-amniotic hemorrhage when the diagnosis is uncertain.…”
