“…79,80 An increased risk of IUGR, fetal death, and placenta-related complications is also recognized as being associated with hyperechoic bowel. 81 Despite its subjectivity, the prevalence of hyperechoic bowel among normal fetuses (0.5%) has been remarkably consistent at our center in the last decade and is also similar to that in other reports, suggesting that different centers can agree on the presence of hyperechoic bowel. We use a grading system for hyperechoic bowel, with grade 1 being mildly echogenic and typically diffuse, grade 2 being moderately echogenic and typically focal, and grade 3 being very echogenic, similar to that of bone structures.…”

“…The pathophysiology of increased bowel echogenicity is likely heterogeneous in nature. Blood, which is extremely echogenic, was reported in the fetal bowel, which could be due to fetal swallowing [Sepulveda et al, 1996] or as a consequence of possible intraluminal bleeding from the thrombocytopenia induced by infection (e.g., by cytomegalovirus, CMV) [Muller et al, 1995;Carlson et al, 2010]. Thus, in these patients, the hyperechogenic bowel was likely associated with intraluminal bleeding caused by thrombocytopenia.…”

“…It has also been observed in women with intra-amniotic bleeding [10,11] , subchorionic hematoma [12] , and prenatal diagnosis of anencephaly [13,14] . In the third trimester of pregnancy, free-floating particulate matter has been attributed to the presence of vernix and meconium [15][16][17][18] and is present in about 88% by 35 weeks [19] .…”
