Some haematological responses of normal and splenectomized rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri to a 12% blood loss

Abstract: Anaemia can be induced in Rainbow trout by removing 12 % of the blood volume by cardiac puncture. Recovery from such an anaemia has been monitored in both normal and splenectomized fish. After the bleeding there is a decrease in red cell numbers, haematocrit and blood haemoglobin concentration. Although recovery in normal trout was not complete within 27 days, which was the period of the observations, it was seen as a replenishing of red cell numbers, haematocrit and blood haemoglobin concentration. Mean corpu… Show more

“…A 12% bleeding of trout is accompanied by an immediate anaemia. However, the recovery from this condition occurs progressively with a tendency to return to normal red cell count, blood haemoglobin and hematocrit values (Lane, 1979). Even after 27 days the mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration indices do not show any significant change from the low values provoked by bleeding.…”

“…In the case of bleeding a modification in the proportional distribution of haemoglobin components of the haemolysate is also seen (Zanjani et al, 1969;Walker et al, 1974;Houston & Smeda, 1979;Lane, 1979;Lane, 1980). These erythropoietic modifiers thus influence the proportion of circulating red cells that are capable of haemoglobin synthesis by influencing the release of reticulocytes from erythropoietic tissues.…”

“…Bleeding procedures decreased the haematocrit values of the fish by at least 50%. Lane (1979) observed a partial recovery of RBC numbers with a 12% blood loss in rainbow trout over a 27 day experimental period. Successively, at T2 until T3 bleeding time RBC, Hct, Hb, TC and lymphocyte values showed an increase in peripheral blood, while a decrease of these parameters at the last bleeding time (T4) was observed and, in particular, a total absence of basophils was found.…”
