Peripheral blood and head kidney haematopoietic tissue response to experimental blood loss in mullet (Mugil cephalus)

Abstract: Changes in haematological parameters and differential leukocyte counts of peripheral blood and head kidney haematopoietic tissue of mullet were assessed after an experimental anaemia, induced by caudal blood extraction. Thirty fish were used and divided into two groups: Group A (control group n = 20) and Group B (experimental group n = 10). From Group A, 10 fish were sacrificed to obtain head kidney control; from the 10 remaining, blood samples were collected by caudal venipuncture. From Group B, blood samples… Show more

“…An experimental blood loss model has been established in several fish species [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. The response to blood loss appears to depend on the fish species: some species recovered in several days [ 15 ], whereas others require weeks [ 16 , 17 ]. In the present study, the bled tilapia exhibited no significant stimulation of erythropoiesis in 12 days ( Figure 6 , control group).…”

“…The erythrocyte count of treated cantang grouper increased during the study. Erythrocyte is frequently used as an initial diagnosis of anemia (Fazio et al, 2015). The result of erythrocyte count in the tested cantang hybrid grouper ranged from 1-4 × 10 6 cells/mm 3 .…”

“…Leukocytes have recognized importance in the non-speci c immunity of sh organisms, and act in in ammatory processes of the tissues, and are thus, indicators of the animal's health (Ishikawa et al 2008;Faggio et al 2015Faggio et al , 2014aFaggio et al , 2014bFazio et al 2015).…”
