Some aspects of an association between the southern oscillation and indian summer monsoon

Abstract: SummaryA significant correlation between the seasonal rainfall over India and the southern oscillation index (SOI) illustrated by Walker is examined on the basis of a long series of 100 year data. The relationship is discussed in the light of recent applications of global interactions in the regional climatic change models through feedback processes. The years of large scale deficient/excess rainfall over India during June-August season are examined in relation to the concurrent SOI regimes. This aspect may be… Show more

“…Other studies addressing ENSO features to the upper level circulation (Jet stream) which in turn affects regional storm tracks and intensity (Hsu and Wallace, 1976;Arkin, 1982;Yang et al, 2002). Studies pertaining to the effects of El Nino on largescale circulation and monsoon rainfall over Indian region are also available (Sikka 1980;Pant and Parthasarathy, 1981;Rasmussen and Carpenter, 1983). Precipitation and electrification are two processes that may coexist in the 142 S. S. KANDALGAONKAR ET AL.…”

“…Several studies show that there is a link between El-Niño and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the intensity of ISMR (e.g., Pant and Parthasarathy, 1981;Sikka, 1980;Rasmusson and Carpenter, 1983). Droughts are more probable during the warmer east Pacific SST phase (El-Niño).…”

“…The relationship between the El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO) and variations in Indian summer monsoon rainfall (SMR) has been demonstrated by many studies (Troup, 1965;Sikka, 1980;Angell, 1981;Pant and Parthasarathy, 1981;Mooley and Parthasarathy, 1983;Bhalme et al, 1983;Carpenter, 1982, 1983;Shukla and Paolino, 1983;Parthasarathy and Pant, 1985;Gregory, 1989;Webster and Yang, 1992;Webster et al, 1998). The ENSO-monsoon teleconnections involve significant simultaneous relationships between monsoon rainfall and various ENSO indices (Krishna Kumar et al, 1995).…”
