Somatic embryogenesis in cassava genotypes from the northeast of Brazil

Abstract: A method for the induction of somatic embryogenesis in eight cassava genotypes from northeastern Brazil is described. The explants used were shoot apexes isolated both from in vitro grown plants and from shoots that sprouted from stem cuttings. Somatic embryogenesis was achieved in high frequencies by the addition in the induction medium of the auxin picloram over a wide range of concentrations. Green cotyledons of primary somatic embryos were used as explants to induce somatic (cyclic) secondary embryogenesis… Show more

“…Table 2 demonstrates the influence of different concentrations of picloram in MS medium supplemented with 0.318 mg/l copper sulfate for the induction of calli from axillary bud explants. Copper sulfate has been reported to induce embryogenic calli in several crops such as cassava and sorghum (Nirwan and Kothari 2003;Feitosa et al 2007).…”

“…In this work, the callus of Manihot esculenta was induced from budded nodal cuttings in the presence of NAA. Many works have been carried out on the establishment of callus culture from cassava using different explants (Peter et al, 2011;Fietosa et al, 2007;Atehnkeng et al, 2005;Schopke et al, 1996), but this is the first time that callus is established from budded nodal cutting of this species. The highest percentage of callogenesis (59.8%) was obtained with 0.08 mg.L -1 NAA.…”
