Solving corrosion problems in biofuels industry

Abstract: Ethanol is increasingly popular as fuel. It is renewable, cleaner than gasoline, and during the 2008 oil price peak, its costs of production without subsidies actually rivalled those of gasoline. The fuel grade ethanol producers are large consumers of stainless steel, in particular for cookers, fermentation tanks, and distillation columns as well as storage tanks for the finished product. The main reason is that cleanliness is important for the enzymes. However, contaminants play an important role in productio… Show more

“…Las medidas propuestas actualmente para minimizar este problema incluyen el empleo de inhibidores de la corrosión [23] , de tratamientos de alivio de tensiones, y la elección de aceros de elevada resistencia a corrosión localizada en presencia de estados tensionales en ambientes clorurados, como son los aceros inoxidables dúplex UNS 32101 [65] .…”

“…It had been mentioned that the only metallic materials compatible and recommended being used with biodiesel are stainless steel and aluminum [18]. Stainless steel it far being the most compatible with biodiesel.…”

“…The interaction of fuel with HDPE tank material was objected in several studies by many authors. The petroleum diesel was found to cause higher weight gain in the HDPE, that is, swelling, than the biodiesel [18]. Otherwise, the glass container provided the best protection to oil samples as indicated by the best sensory properties, followed by plastic and tinplate containers [21].…”

“…Ethanol has been increasingly used as a blend in gasoline as well [7] [8]. While it is renewable, bio-ethanol is known to be corrosive to stainless steel and other metals/alloys [8], and gas tank corrosion has led to leaks that require detection.…”

“…Ethanol has been increasingly used as a blend in gasoline as well [7] [8]. While it is renewable, bio-ethanol is known to be corrosive to stainless steel and other metals/alloys [8], and gas tank corrosion has led to leaks that require detection. Since ethanol and gasoline have different physical and thermodynamic properties, engines in vehicles, especially flex fuel vehicles, need to be optimized for performance accordingly [9].…”
