Solidification characteristics of atomized AlCu4Mg1-SiC composite powders

Abstract: In this study, rapidly solidified metal matrix composite powders have been produced by PREP (Plasma rotating electrode process) atomization. AlCu4Mg1 alloy is used as the matrix material while SiC particles, with about 650 nm average particle size, are used as the reinforcement phase. The microstructural and solidification characteristics of composite particles are studied using optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The relationship between secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) and particle di… Show more

“…1 Among these materials, aluminium alloys have been considered and studied by many researchers. [2][3][4][5][6] Owing to the weak mechanical properties of pure aluminium, many works have been performed to enhance the properties of aluminium by alloying and heat treatment. 7 Through alloying, high mechanical strength can be obtained by the formation of a fine and homogeneous distribution of intermetallic compounds, which must be stable at high temperatures.…”

“…In the light of the experimental results, the following conclusions are drawn. The eutectic phase consisting of Al 2 Cu and Mg 2 Si can be expected to affect the sintering of the composite because of the metals' lower melting point (1). Joule effect and electric discharge owed to a high heating rate were generated at the particle boundaries during spark sintering of the composite particles, local temperature of the contact point increased and eutectic melting occurred along the particle boundaries resulting in high relative density.…”

“…Most of the research for automotive applications is based on Al [2][3][4]. Recently, Mg has attracted more attention in many industrial applications, primarily the automotive and aerospace industries, because it is about two-thirds as dense as Al [5,6].…”
