Solid phase extraction of uranium and thorium on octadecyl bonded silica modified with Cyanex 302 from aqueous solutions

Abstract: A simple and reliable method for rapid extraction and determination of uranium and thorium using octadecyl-bonded silica modified with Cyanex 302 is presented. Extraction efficiency and the influence of various parameters such as aqueous phase pH, flow rate of sample solution and amount of extractant has been investigated. The study showed that the extraction of uranium and thorium increase with increasing pH value and was found to be quantitative at pH 6; and the retention of ions was not affected significant… Show more

“…By discharging the effluents from textile industries and nuclear power plants, the production of electrical cables, batteries, ores, steel and electrical TVs, the wastewater is contaminated by heavy metals, dyes and radioactive elements [41][42][43]. Heavy metals are toxic for living organisms and they show the properties of bioaccumulation and non-biodegradability [44][45][46].…”

“…Therefore, a separation and preconcentration step is commonly applied before instrumental analysis. 1,[6][7][8][9] Preconcentration/ separation techniques, such as solid phase extraction (SPE), 3,[10][11][12][13] liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME), 14 and cloud point extraction (CPE) [15][16][17] are used for the determination of uranium in various samples. SPE has commonly been used as a technique for preconcentration/separation due to its higher enrichment factor and practicality.…”

“…Many separation and enrichment techniques including solid phase extraction with Quinoline-8-ol modified cellulose [7], adsorption on MnO 2 impregnated filter cartridges [8], coprecipitation with MnO 2 [9], solvent extraction [10], ion exchange [11] membrane treatment [12], electrodeposition [13] and molecularly imprinting [14] have been used for thorium. Solid phase extraction is one of the significant preconcentration-separation methods for trace heavy metal ions, due to its simplicity, flexibility, low-cost and being environmentally friendly [15].…”
