Soil salinity assessment research using remote sensing techniques: a special focus on recent research

Abstract: Soil salinity is an important environmental problem affecting arid and semi-arid regions. There are direct measures for measuring soil salinity but the conventional methods of assessing soil salinity through chemical analysis is time consuming. With the development of GIS, remote sensing and its popularization in soil science research, the evaluation of soil salinity has become much easier, with the advantage of getting accurate results without tedious sampling. This research addresses the status of various st… Show more

“…Despite the advantages brought on by remote sensing-based approaches in this regard, fundamental challenges must be addressed to ensure its valid representativeness. Not only must the spatial and spectral resolutions of sensors be carefully selected to ensure that the data obtained are suitable for the study scale, but atmospheric interference and calibration issues should be addressed to optimize the product's accuracy [97]. To fully harness the potential of remote sensing, it is crucial to develop robust techniques that can address the associated challenges and ensure the accuracy and validity of acquired data.…”

“…Only four species (23.5%) survived until the end of the growing season: Halogeton glomeratus, Suaeda acuminata, Climacoptera aralensis and Atriplex fominii [23]. The use of biochar, manure, preparations and rhizobacteria is highly effective in growing plants and improving soil properties under the influence of drought and salinity stress factors [1,[24][25][26][27]. In other similar studies, the regression rate of the Aral Sea coastline was determined at 5-year intervals from 1965 to 2019, depending on the landform, lithology, depth and salinity of the groundwater.…”

“…Processes such as the emergence and development of life in dried seabed soil can be observed only by studying the microbiological composition of the soil [1,2,10]. Changes in soil layer development and properties are primarily related to vegetation regeneration and vegetation persistence [27,[29][30][31]. The regeneration of plants helps the development of the soil layer.…”

“…Salinity is a pervasive issue in many arid and semi-arid regions worldwide, including Uzbekistan, where it significantly impacts crop productivity and agricultural yields (Hamad, 2016;Asfaw et al, 2018;Zörb et al, 2019). In Uzbekistan alone, saline soils affect half of the 4.2 million-hectare irrigated agricultural area (Kholdorov et al, 2022). Several factors contribute to soil salinization, such as mineralization, groundwater depth, and the imbalance between precipitation and evaporation (Stavi et al, 2021;Zhang et al, 2022).…”
