This study investigates the potential socio-political commentaries entailed by the multimodal metaphorical conceptualizations in Egyptian and American coronavirus memes. A contrastive qualitative and quantitative analysis is carried out on 80 multimodal memes, retrieved from Facebook, in which Coronavirus is the target domain. The sample is composed of 40 Egyptian and 40 American Coronavirus Memes. The data are analyzed within the framework of Cyberpragmatics (Yus, 2019), the methodological tools of analysis of multimodal metaphorical approach (Forceville, 2008), and the tools of the compositional meaning of the visual and verbal semiotics (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006). Five multimodal conceptual metaphors are identified, introducing different thematic representations which carry socio-political commentaries. The commentaries reflect varied universal and cultural-specific ideologies.

The events of 2019—2021 affected the social optimism index and the social well-being of Russians, strengthening the constantly present multidirectional trends towards consolidation and isolation in society. The object of the study is borrowed and appeared in the Runet functioning in the specified period Internet memes that translate the meanings of unity and isolation. The relevance of the research is determined by the need to study new principles of information dissemination and its desirable characteristics in an information-overloaded society, the cognitive potential of the “visual turn” in the humanities, the social significance of the content represented by the studied units, the lack of linguistic, interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical studies in this field. The source of the material is a variety of services and libraries of memes on the Internet. The article describes the current state of Internet meme research in the Russian and European humanities. The article presents the analysis of Internet memes selected in accordance with the given semantic characteristics in their dynamics within the framework of N. A. Zinovieva’s typology, built on six dichotomies (truth — lie, character — event, tradition — innovation, background — figure, image — text, thought — action). Observations on the specifics of the precedent phenomena in the formation and development of Internet memes are presented. The structure of the Internet meme is described. It has a field organization, including a constant core formed by a visual template and the generalized meaning of the Internet meme. The conclusion is made about the relevant features of Internet memes of the ideographic group under study, which determine the features of meme encoding of socially significant information and the translation of socio-cultural meanings.

Results of the studies on the way language and body coordinate in communication (through language and gesture) have significant implications for language, education, and cognitive studies. However, there is a lack of convenient research in this area analyzing perceptual changes within individuals. To fill this gap, we investigated the embodied realizations of literal sentences representing perceptual changes and metaphorical sentences describing the phenomena in terms of perceptual changes. We classified sentences that referred to a visual, auditory, haptic, gustatory, or olfactory change. Participants listened to four narratives that contained five literal sentences describing a real perceptual change and five metaphorical sentences that described a phenomenon in terms of a perceptual change. We analyzed the recorded videos of the participants. The total number of literal sentences that described a real perceptual change was obtained for each modality (visual, auditory, haptic, gustatory, olfactory) separately. Also, the total number of gestures used with each category of these literal statements was obtained. Only iconic and non-iconic gestures that described such perceptual changes as the movement of an object in the space were counted. The results revealed that gestures accompanied at least 53% of literal and 56% of metaphorical sentences. These results suggest that literal and metaphorical perceptual change sentences could be understood as movements at a conceptual level. The similarity between embodied realizations of literal and metaphorical sentences supports one of the main assumptions of the strong version of embodied cognition.
