Abstract:This article presents an analysis of how social media was used during Tropical Cyclone Winston, the strongest recorded tropical storm that left a wake of destruction and devastation in Fiji during February 2016. Social media is increasingly being used in crises and disasters as an alternative form of communication. Social media use in crisis communication varies according to the context, the disaster and the maturity of social media use. Fiji's experience during TC Winston contributes to the growing literature as it shows how social media was used during each stage of a disaster in a developing country. The article finds that before the cyclone, people used social media to share information about the cyclone and to be informed about the cyclone. During the cyclone, individuals used social media to share their experiences with some citizens capturing the cyclone as it happened and even one citizen live-tweeted her ordeal during the cyclone. Finally, following the cyclone, the hashtag #StrongerThanWinston was coined as a rallying point to bolster a sense of national solidarity.

Approaches to traditional travel diary construction rely on tourist participation and manual recording; hence, they are not only time-consuming but also limited in the scale and the number of samples. Online social network platforms have been used as alternative data sources for capturing the movements and travel patterns of tourists at a large scale. However, they fail to provide detailed contextual information on tourist activities for further analysis. In this paper, we present a new approach to travel diary construction based on the venue check-in data available in mobile social media with rich information on locations, time, and activities. Our case study focuses on the inbound tourism in Hong Kong using a data set comprising of 17,355 check-ins generated by 600 tourists. We demonstrate how the proposed travel diary can provide useful practical implications for applications in location management, transportation management, impact management, and tourist experience promotion among others.

Streszczenie. Problemy ekologiczne przekraczają granice polityczne, a wdrażanie zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju napotyka na bariery i jest kontestowane przez niektóre grupy społeczne. Dalsza realizacja w pełnym zakresie tej idei wymaga zatem głębokich przemian w społeczeństwie, poprzedzonych szerokimi konsultacjami społecznymi. W związku z tym tworzy się przestrzeń do edukacyjnych i promocyjnych działań na jej rzecz. Serwisy społecznościowe posiadają wielką i jeszcze nie w pełni docenianą siłę oddziaływania społecznego. Stosowane tam metody przekazu treści i sposoby argumentowania nie mieszczą się w klasycznych ramach. W prezentowanym artykule skupiono się na specyfice wykorzystania serwisów społecznościowych przy promowaniu zasad zrówno-ważonego rozwoju i kwestii z tym związanych.Słowa kluczowe: rozwój zrównoważony, internetowe serwisy społeczno-ściowe PROMOTING THE IDEA OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICES Abstract: The environmental problems cross political boundaries and the objectives of environmental protection often evoke disputes and tension. The implementation of the principles of sustainable development encounters barriers and is contested by some social groups. Therefore, further realization of the idea of sustainable development in its full range requires profound changes in society, preceded by broad public consultation. Consequently, it creates a space for educational and promotional activities. Social networking services have a great and not fully appreciated impact on society. The methods of transferring information and the ways of arguing used by social networking services go beyond the traditional framework. This article focuses on the specific use of social networking in the implementation of the principles of sustainable development and related issues.
