Systematic sampling of human necropsy pancreases has revealed that pancreatic polypeptide (PP) cells are not distributed equally in the gland. PP-cells are the most abundant cell type in the posterior part of the pancreatic head while they are scarce or absent in the remainder of the gland. The PP-rich part of the head can be separated by blunt dissection from the pancreas as a discrete lobe. This lobe probably originates from the ventral pancreatic bud during embryogenesis. A quantitative study of the immunofluorescent endocrine cell types (insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide cells) in PP-rich and PP-poor regions of pancreases in 8 subjects with ages ranging from 33 fetal weeks to 80 years, showed that the proportions of the cell types were different in youngs and adults.
Ninety-three adult patients with benign esophageal stricture were randomized to receive balloon or bougie dilatation. Eighty-five patients were eligible for analysis and were followed prospectively for a year. Twenty-four patients required repeat dilatation within a year, but 50 patients completed a year's follow-up without further dilatation. The bougie group initially had a better symptomatic result, experiencing significantly less dysphagia at five months, although this difference had disappeared at one year. Eighteen patients in the balloon group required redilatation for symptoms compared with six in the bougie group. The bougie group had a significantly greater increase in their stricture diameter, and this was still present at one year after dilatation. There was no significant difference in safety or patient acceptability. Balloons are probably more costly to use than bougies. Bougie dilatation is to be preferred to balloon dilatation in adults except in special circumstances.
In this paper, we draw on fieldwork with middle‐class investors in ‘fast money schemes’ (Ponzi scams) to consider how Neo‐Pentecostal Christianity may be mediating social and economic change in Papua New Guinea, particularly in relation to gender equality. Ideas of companionate marriage and the cultivation of an affective self imply masculinities that are more sensitive and less domineering. As these images of fulfilled modernity flow out from Pentecostal churches into broader Papua New Guinean society, they corroborate Taylor's theory of how change occurs within the modern social imaginary.
