Social media captures demographic and regional physical activity

Abstract: ObjectivesWe examined the use of data from social media for surveillance of physical activity prevalence in the USA.MethodsWe obtained data from the social media site Twitter from April 2015 to March 2016. The data consisted of 1 382 284 geotagged physical activity tweets from 481 146 users (55.7% men and 44.3% women) in more than 2900 counties. We applied machine learning and statistical modelling to demonstrate sex and regional variations in preferred exercises, and assessed the association between reports o… Show more

“…We observe several similarities between the data for males and females. However, major disparities such as, differences in the mention of high intensity physical activities (Cesare et al, 2019) agrees with data suggesting that women are less likely to meet physical activity recommendations compared to men (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018b). Furthermore, women report foods with higher calories and have an overall higher obesity prevalence Flegal et al, 2016;Tauqeer et al, 2018).…”

“…Timely surveillance of changes in physical activity prevalence and dietary habits would be valuable for understanding the association between these factors and obesity prevalence in communities. One approach to surveillance is the use of data from digital sources, which are useful for estimating various health quantities by monitoring the seeking and sharing of health information, as well as changes in behaviors, sentiments or norms (Cesare et al, 2019;Olson et al, 2013;Yuan et al, 2013;Nsoesie et al, 2014;Nsoesie et al, 2015;Nguyen et al, 2016;Nguyen et al, 2017). Specifically, data from Twitter-a social media platformhave been shown to provide insights into trends and disparities in health behaviors including, diet and physical activity (Griffin and Jiao, 2015;Jestico et al, 2016;Nguyen et al, 2017;Cesare et al, 2019;Torres et al, 2018).…”

“…In the current era, learning with digital media is no longer prohibited, even now, during the corona pandemic around the world, learning that was initially face-to-face was replaced with learning using digital media (Cesare et al, 2019). Students of 4 th and 5 th elementary school grade will be very happy if they hold gadget, now this should not be misused just for playing games or using social media, but actually it will be more useful when children are directed to use gadget to help in the learning they are going through.…”

“…Zhang et al (2019) indicated that geographical proximity was the more closely related to differences of regional dish preference than climate proximity. For other scenarios, Cesare et al (2019) analysed data from social media to demonstrate sex and regional variations in preferred exercises, and got significant gender and regional differences. Barone and Assirelli (2019) proved gender inequalities in the labour market.…”
