Social integration and age-related decline in lung function.

Abstract: Each additional social role reported at baseline was associated with less of a decline in lung function between baseline and the follow-up assessment four years later. The association withstood controls for demographics, weight, and height and was mediated by more positive and less negative affect and lower rates of cigarette smoking and more physical activity. Roles were mostly substitutable, with both high (spouse, parent, friends, relatives) and low (employee, religious service attendee, volunteer, members … Show more

“…Several studies have shown that low physical and social activities are related to faster decline in PF [ 14 , 18 ]. Therefore, assessing the role of physical and social activity in the association of cardiovascular burden with PF decline is needed for the primary prevention of pulmonary dysfunction.…”

“…Nesse sentido, destaca-se que todos os fatores de influência são importantes, desde as boas práticas na manipulação e higiene de alimentos (WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, 2020) até a troca de afeto, contribuem independentemente com a manutenção da homeostase orgânica e bem-estar, podendo ser decisivos no enfrentamento do desequilíbrio provocado pela doença (CRITTENDEN;MURPHY;COHEN, 2018).…”

“…Emerging evidence suggests that impaired PF may contribute to disability in older adults ( 6 , 18–20 ), but few studies have addressed this issue using longitudinal data ( 5 , 21 , 22 ). Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), lower levels of social activity, and cognitive function are all related to both impaired PF ( 3 , 23 , 24 ) and disability ( 25–27 ) and may play a modulating role in the PF-disability association. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated whether and to what extent poor PF affects the progression of disability among older adults and if this is influenced by social activity, cognitive function, and CVDs.…”
