We test the relationship between happiness and self-rated health in Italy. The analysis relies on a unique dataset collected through the administration of a questionnaire to a representative sample (n = 817) of the population of the Italian Province of Trento in March 2011. Based on probit regressions, instrumental variables estimates and structural equations modelling, we find that happiness is strongly correlated with perceived good health, after controlling for a number of relevant socio-economic phenomena. Health inequalities based on income, work status and education are relatively contained in respect to the rest of Italy. As expected, this scales down the role of social capital.

IntroduçãoNos últimos anos, o conceito de "capital social" tem sido utilizado na literatura internacional em uma vasta gama de disciplinas entre as quais: sociologia, antropologia, educação, economia, ciências políticas, criminologia e saúde pública. Trata-se de um conceito desafiador, pois incorpora o freqüentemente negligenciado "social" com o onipotente "capital". Capital social enfatiza o fato de que formas e relações não-monetárias podem ser importantes fontes de poder e influência 1 .Sua proeminência recente, na área da saú-de, é simultânea ao momento em que a epidemiologia está passando por uma profunda revisão crítica de suas próprias capacidades para capturar fenômenos sociais 2 . A literatura corrente também evidencia que, devido ao fato de o conceito ser entendido e avaliado de diferentes formas, muitas críticas têm sido feitas quanto ao seu uso 3,4 .No entanto, um grande e crescente número de pesquisas tem sugerido que capital social favorece a saúde das pessoas. Social capital, health, and care home residence among older adults: a secondary analysis of the Health Survey for England 2000

This secondary analysis of the Health Survey for England 2000 aimed to investigate whether individual-level social capital is associated with care home residence and with function, mental health, and self-assessed health in older adults. Older adults in both care home and community residential settings were included. Two indicators of social capital, perceived social support and group participation, were considered for both care home and community-dwelling respondents. Amongst community dwellers, trust in others was considered as a third indicator. Functional impairment, psychiatric morbidity, and self-assessed health were used as indicators of health. Multivariable modelling was undertaken using logistic or ordinal logistic regression. The results show that severe lack of social support was associated with over twice the odds of care home residence, with increased odds of psychiatric morbidity in both care home and community settings, and with more severe functional impairment and worse self-assessed health in the community but not in care homes. Participation in more groups was associated with lower odds of functional impairment in both settings, and with lower odds of psychiatric morbidity and better self-assessed health among community but not among care home respondents. High levels of trust were associated with lower severity of functional impairment, reduced odds of psychiatric morbidity, and better self-assessed health. It is concluded that individual-level social capital was associated with care home residence and with indicators of physical, mental and self-assessed health. These associations differed between community and care home settings, and were generally stronger in the community.
