“…The Newnes records pick up the end of the long-term drought (1939)(1940)(1941)(1942)(1943)(1944)(1945)(1946)(1947)(1948) followed by a mild period, but with increasing dryness from 1990 to 1998. Since 1998 drought conditions continued into the mid to late 2000s, followed by higher rainfall in 2011-2012. Recent work on the geomorphology of the area indicates that during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) c. 20 000 years bp, the climate was much drier and the Plateau vegetation was likely to have been treeless (Hesse et al 2003, Wilkinson et al 2005, Wilkinson & Humphreys 2006.
