“Slide less pathology”: Fairy tale or reality?

Abstract: Pathology practice is significantly advanced in various frontiers. Therefore, “slide less digital” pathology will not be a mere imagination in near future. Digitalization of histopathological slides (whole slide imaging [WSI]) is possible with the help of whole slide scanner. The WSI has a positive impact not only in routine practice but also in research field, medical education and bioindustry. Even if digital pathology has definitive advantages, its widespread use is not yet possible. As it is an upcoming te… Show more

“…Maxillofacial Pathology noted that some of the key challenges with digital pathology are the high costs associated with equipment and training, and psychological barriers to change, while the actual rate of reported diagnostic discrepancies between glass and digital is extremely low. 21 In a validation study of 70 oral pathology cases by Araújo et al, the intra-observer agreement was 97% after a 3-month washout period. These authors reported that most discrepancies resided with challenging cases and inadequate tissue quantity.…”

“…This is particularly true for contemporary trends, such as the construction of three-dimensional tissue models and in vivo imaging, for which optical microscopes were replaced by digital imaging (9,10). Scanners nowadays are able to create a digital image of the entire slide, which can then be viewed virtually on smartphones, tablets and laptops (11,12). The possibility of analyzing data on-the-go, or even on the other side of the planet, is a marked benefit of digital imaging and virtual microscopy (13).…”

“…In recent years, however, the costs have rapidly reduced (11 slides is the file size, which can be particularly large, thus requiring better and more expensive computers for optimal performance and transmission over the internet (4,5,11).…”

“…The multiple images (tiles or lines, respectively) are captured and digitally assembled (''stitched'') to generate a digital image of the entire slide. 9,10 When pairing scanners with slide staining techniques, WSI can be categorized as brightfield, fluorescent, and multispectral. Some scanners can accommodate more than one modality, for example enabling both brightfield and fluorescent scanning.…”

“…Fluorescent scanners always capture images as tiles. 9 Multispectral imaging captures spectral information across the spectrum of light. It can be applied to both the brightfield and fluorescent settings.…”
