Comparison between digital and optical microscopy: Analysis in a mouse gut inflammation model

Abstract: Abstract. Virtual microscopy is currently widely used for various purposes, such as teaching, archiving, collaborations and research. Although the cost of this technique has reduced, it continues to be expensive for the majority of laboratories in developing countries. The Graduate Program in Pathology at the Federal Fluminense University (Niterói, Brazil) has acquired equipment for virtual microscopy. However, this novel method faced prejudice, as students and technicians were skeptical about its reliability.… Show more

“…These results were further verified by using opto-digital microscopy. An opto-digital microscope incorporates conventional optical microscope, digital multimedia acquisition, and digital processing software to obtain highest quality images allowing to display the image details [ 39 , 40 ]. The resulting images corroborated the almost complete lack of biofilm formation in silicone sheets functionalized with AgNPs, as compared to control, non-functionalized, elastomers.…”

“…After 1 h fixation at room temperature (RT) elastomers were observed on the surface to document the morphology of the mixed biofilm attached to the surface of the sheets by DSX500 High-resolution opto- digital microscope (ODM) to image and to visualize the biofilm growth or inhibition on the functionalized elastomers. We used the capability of this ODM to capture 2D images of the surface of the elastomers as ODM is a reliable method for biomedical exploration purposes [ 40 ].…”

“…A mouse model of gut inflammation developed by Teixeira was used. Briefly, animals were block‐randomized (as described by Suresh) into three groups (allergic, tolerant and control nonallergic).…”

“…The experiment was ended on the 30th day of the challenge diet period, with an overdose of anaesthetics (60 mg/kg of xylazine + 350 mg/kg of ketamine; Sespo Industries ® , Paulinia, Sao Paulo, Brazil) as previously described . After examining the peritoneal cavity, a 5‐cm segment of the proximal small intestine starting at the gastro‐duodenum junction was collected for histopathology.…”

“…Nowadays, VM has become more convenient and is widely used in medical education and for research. 4 In the Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital (RA), Mahidol University curriculum, the main topics in histology laboratory practice for medical students are basic tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue) and organ systems (Table 1).…”
