This paper proposes control algorithms for the minimum copper loss (MCL) operation of a single-phase gridtied wound rotor machine. The wound rotor machine, which has a single-phase winding in the stator and three-phase windings in the rotor, has been proposed as an attractive alternative of the conventional ac machines in single-phase grid system. In the proposed system, the stator winding is directly fed by the single-phase grid while the rotor windings are connected to an isolated three-phase inverter for the variable speed operation. Characteristics of the system were analyzed based on the machine model, and the condition of the minimum copper loss (MCL) operation was derived in the entire speed range. For tracking of the MCL operating point, the proposed method adjusts the ratio between rotor current variables while power factor of the grid, speed, and dc link voltage are simultaneously controlled. The feasibility and MCL tracking performance of the proposed control system were verified by experiments under various operating conditions.

This paper deals with a stand-alone single-phase power generation using a three-phase isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) coupled with a wind turbine or a pico-hydro turbine. The proposed voltage and frequency controller (VFC) for a stand-alone single-phase power generation is used as a phase balancer for a three-phase IAG, a load leveler, and an active filter. The VFC is realized using a three-leg voltage-source converter and a battery energy storage system. The VFC ensures optimum utilization of a three-phase IAG for feeding a variety of single-phase loads, improves conversion efficiency, and reduces noise and vibration in the IAG. The rating considerations of an IAG and VFCs are also discussed for a single-phase power generation. The performance of an IAG system is demonstrated under steady-state and dynamic conditions of feeding single-phase linear and nonlinear loads. Simulated results are validated with test results on a developed system. Micro-hydro power plants less than 10 kW usually supply isolated networks. This paper presents a new control method for a stand-alone three-phase induction generator supplying single-phase loads. Besides voltage and frequency regulation, the phase balancing should be ensured for this particular operating regime. The proposed control topology relies on a combination between a voltage source inverter (VSI) and a dump load (DL). The VSI imposes the system frequency and performs the unbalances compensation, while the DL deals with the voltage regulation. Through simulations and experiments, the reliability of such a configuration is tested when supplying varying loads. The results show a stable operation for a wide range of loads, during both steady-state and transitory regimes; moreover, the maximum obtained power in single-phase mode of operation is close to the generator rating in three-phase mode of operation.
