Stand-alone micro-hydro power plant with induction generator supplying single phase loads

Abstract: Micro-hydro power plants less than 10 kW usually supply isolated networks. This paper presents a new control method for a stand-alone three-phase induction generator supplying single-phase loads. Besides voltage and frequency regulation, the phase balancing should be ensured for this particular operating regime. The proposed control topology relies on a combination between a voltage source inverter (VSI) and a dump load (DL). The VSI imposes the system frequency and performs the unbalances compensation, while … Show more

“…This extends the ability of control design. Most of the mentioned state-based LFC controllers of micro hydro power plants [1,2,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]19] usually have an assumption that all the system states are measurable. The assumption is too strict to be achieved in practice.…”

“…Operation of micro hydro power plants is flexible and is deployed in different environments. Usually, there are two operating modes in these plants, i.e., isolated mode and grid-connected mode [1]. Under either mode, consumers fed by micro hydro power plants require continuous supply of power with good quality.…”

“…A more detailed presentation of the control system can be found on a previous author's research [22]. Based on the results obtained there, up to loading of 85%, the generator and its control algorithm manage to ensure constant voltage and frequency.…”

“…For off-grid or stand-alone low power generation based upon MHP unit, the induction generator (IG) is considered more suitable than the synchronous one (Ion and Marinescu, 2013a;Ion and Marinescu, 2013b;Ion and Marinescu, 2012) because of its advantages like low price, robustness, reduced size, simple starting and synchronization, low maintenance, good response to faults and overloads and no need of external DC power supply when capacitors are used for excitation (Ion and Marinescu, 2011;Raza et al, 2013). However, for the low power range of few kW, induction machines are not manufactured specifically to operate as generators thus, series induction motors are employed as generators (Smith, 2008;Ion and Marinescu, 2013c).…”
