Single exposure lensless subpixel phase imaging: optical system design, modelling, and experimental study

Abstract: Design and optimization of lensless phase-retrieval optical system with phase modulation of free-space propagation wavefront is proposed for subpixel imaging to achieve super-resolution reconstruction. Contrary to the traditional super-resolution phase-retrieval, the method in this paper requires a single observation only and uses the advanced Super-Resolution Sparse Phase Amplitude Retrieval (SR-SPAR) iterative technique which contains optimized sparsity based filters and multi-scale filters. The successful o… Show more

“…The technique can also be integrated into polariscopy for orientation measurements [ 48 ]. We believe that the tutorial will be useful for beginners and young scientists who would like to begin research in the area of QPI and follow the latest developments in the area [ 49 , 50 ]. Furthermore, the low-cost and easy to implement conditions will encourage academic research activities on QPI in developing countries.…”

“…This has been due to the advance in cutting-edge technologies such as 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing and shotgun metagenomics. Numerous pre-clinical studies now demonstrate that the diversity of the gut microbiome influences a wide range of diseases including autoimmune disorders (2-4), diabetes (5,6), obesity (7,8), cardiovascular disease (9,10), and cancer (11,12). Interestingly, a growing body of evidence suggests that reintroducing 'good' bacteria to the microbiome in the form of probiotics can dampen the severity of disease (13,14).…”

“…Although the Fresnel lenses are also sensitive to chromatic aberrations when used with broadband sources and distort the formed images. Another lensless approach -which we followed -is to use wavefront modulation with modulation mask [25][26][27] or diffuser 28 . They distort the illumination carrying wavefront and provide a coded pattern on the sensor with known modulation.…”

“…In our previous paper 26 design and modelling of single-exposure lensless system is proposed with wavefront modulation by random binary phase mask. The successful super-resolved reconstruction is relying on support constraint on the object plane with known diameter of the laser beam and a sparsity-based block-matching 3D (BM3D) 31 filter.…”
