Simvastatin and Serum Adiponectin Concentrations in Patients With Established Cardiovascular Disease

Abstract: Background:Adiponectin is an adipose tissue-derived protein with anti-inflammatory properties. Statins are a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs, widely used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Objectives:In the current study, we aimed to assess the effects of simvastatin on serum levels of adiponectin in patients with dyslipidemia, recruited from Ghaem Hospital, Mashhad, Iran.Materials and Methods:A total of 102 patients with dyslipidemia were treated with simvastatin or placebo during a double-blind, cr… Show more

“…More details of the study have been published elsewhere. [ 5 ] Fifty-one patients received 40 mg/day simvastatin for 1 month, and another group (51) received a placebo (same size and color with treatment capsules and filled with starch) for 30 days. After a further 2-week washout period, the patients crossed over to the other form of treatment.…”

“…[ 5 ] Statins inhibit the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, and reduce serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels substantially. [ 5 ] Further to their conventional lipid-modulating effects, statins possess so-called “pleiotropic” properties, which comprise improvement of endothelial function, antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory properties, plaque stabilization, and inhibition platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. [ 6 ] It has been reported that statins treatment may be associated with an improved Vitamin D status,[ 7 8 9 10 ] but this is not a consistent finding.…”

“…They are very effective agents in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases . Accordingly, statins are now widely used for those indications, with nearly a quarter of the USA adults currently taking a statin, while another 12·8 million could be considered for therapy based on the latest guidelines . Although it has been suggested that statins are relatively safe for prolonged use, there are still concerns that long‐term commitment of individuals to statin could lead to the expression of some deleterious consequences of statins through a cumulative effect over time.…”
