Tuberculosis is a major public health problem in Nigeria. Drug resistant tuberculosis is now common place due to poor patient compliance and lack of detection of resistant strains. The occurrence of HIV has been responsible for an increased frequency of tuberculosis. Knowledge of the blood picture in pulmonary tuberculosis, is believed, will be a valuable tool in the management of patients. This study aimed at providing information on haematological changes in pulmonary tuberculosis. A total of 200 subjects were investigated. One hundred of these were pulmonary tuberculosis patients comprising 62 males and 38 females who attended the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and the Dr. Lawrence Henshaw Memorial Hospital (Infectious Diseases Hospital), Calabar, Cross River State; while the remaining 100 were non-pulmonary tuberculosis subjects comprising 50 males and 50 females who served as control subjects. Standard techniques were used for the assays. Routine haematological analyses were carried out which included Packed Cell Volume, Haemoglobin concentration, Mean Cell Volume, Mean Cell Haemoglobin, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, Platelet and Total White Blood Cell counts. Age and gender were also evaluated in the enrolled subjects. Results showed significantly lower values (p<0.05) for Packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration and mean cell haemoglobin concentration in pulmonary tuberculosis patients than in control subjects while mean cell volume and erythrocyte sedimentation rate showed significantly higher values in pulmonary tuberculosis patients than in control subjects. Packed cell volume, Haemoglobin concentration, Mean Cell Volume, Mean Cell Haemoglobin, and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate of pulmonary tuberculosis patients co-infected with HIV were significantly affected (p<0.05). The highest prevalence rate of infection (60%) occurred in the age group (10-30) years. In conclusion, the study showed that tuberculosis had significant effects on the haematological parameters analysed which were in turn aggravated in co-infection with HIV.

Objective: To determine the difference in the nutritional status of elderly people depending on their consumption of fruits and vegetables, and to study the possible association between the consumption of these foods and different cardiovascular risk factors, especially total plasma homocysteine (t-Hcys) levels. Design, setting and subjects: A cross-sectional study in 152 institutionalised older people from Madrid aged $ 65 years. Food and nutrient intakes were recorded over 7 days using the 'precise individual weighing' method. The weight, height, and waist and hip circumferences of all subjects were recorded, as were their a-erythrocyte glutathione reductase, serum B 6 , B 12 and folate levels, erythrocyte folate levels, t-Hcys levels, serum lipids and blood pressure. The experimental population was then divided into tertiles depending on the serving intake of fruit and vegetables (T1, , 2.29 servings day 21 ; T2, 2.29-2.79 servings day 21 ; and T3, .2.79 servings day 21 ). Results: Compared with T1 subjects, T3 subjects showed consumptions of cereals, pulses, meat, fish and eggs closer to those recommended (P , 0.05). In addition, the contribution of their diet towards covering the recommended daily intake of vitamin B 1 , niacin, vitamin B 6 , folic acid, vitamin C, B 12 , vitamin A, and P, Mg, Zn and Fe was higher. The intake of fibre increased with consumption of fruit and vegetables (r ¼ 0.6839, P , 0.001). T3 subjects also had better serum and erythrocyte folate levels than T1 and T2 subjects (P , 0.05). A positive correlation was found between the consumption of fruit and vegetables and serum folate (r ¼ 0.2665, P , 0.01) and with erythrocyte folate levels (r ¼ 0.2034, P , 0.05), and a negative correlation with t-Hcys (r ¼ 2 0.2493, P , 0.01). Conclusions: Greater consumption of fruit and vegetables is associated with better food habits, increased vitamin and mineral intakes and lower t-Hcys levels. Considering that the fruit and vegetable intake in Spanish elderly people is very low, it is recommended that the consumption of fruits and vegetables by elderly people be increased.

Aim: To study characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis amongst patients attending chest clinics in Benin City. Materials and Methods: A total of 816 subjects comprising of 563 (69%) males and 253 (31%) females were enlisted for this study. Sputum specimen and blood were collected from all subjects. Acid alcohol fast bacilli from sputa were examined using the Ziehl Nelson staning technique. Hemoglobin concentration was determined using the method described by Dacis and Lewis. Result: Pulmonary tuberculosis infection was significantly affected by age among the male and female subjects studied (P < 0.05). Subjects within the age group of 21 - 30 years and 41 - 50 years had the highest risk of acquiring TB amongst the male and female population respectively. Although the unemployed subjects had the highest prevalence of TB (35%), occupation did not significantly affect the prevalence of TB (P > 0.05). Irrespective of gender, anemia was significantly associated with pulmonary tuberculosis infection (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis (37.4%) was significantly affected by age among male and female subjects. Anemia was associated with TB infection. Intervention effort at curbing the prevalence of TB and anemia is advocated.
