The simultaneous voltammetric determination of melatonin (MT) and pyridoxine (PY) has been carried out at a cathodically pretreated boron‐doped diamond electrode. By using cyclic voltammetry, a separation of the oxidation peak potentials of both compounds present in mixture was about 0.47 V in Britton‐Robinson buffer, pH 2. The results obtained by square‐wave voltammetry allowed a method to be developed for determination of MT and PY simultaneously in the ranges 1–100 μg mL−1 (4.3×10−6–4.3×10−4 mol L−1) and 10–175 μg mL−1 (4.9×10−5–8.5×10−4 mol L−1), with detection limits of 0.14 μg mL−1 (6.0×10−7 mol L−1) and 1.35 μg mL−1 (6.6×10−6 mol L−1), respectively. The proposed method was successfully to the dietary supplements samples containing these compounds for health‐caring purposes.

Regulating cellular behaviors such as cellular spatial arrangement and cellular phenotype is critical for managing tissue microstructure and biological function for engineered tissue regeneration. We herein pattern drug-laden poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) into grooves using novel Teflon stamps (that possess excellent properties of resistance to harsh organic solvents and molecular adsorption) for engineered tendon-repair therapeutics. The drug release and biological properties of melatonin-laden PLGA grooved micropatterns are investigated. The results reveal that fibroblasts cultured on the melatonin-laden PLGA groove micropatterns not only display significant cell alignment that mimics the cell behavior in native tendon, but also promote the secretion of a major extracellular matrix in tendon, type I collagen, indicating great potential for the engineering of functional tendon regeneration.

Melatonin (MT) is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland which regulates sleep rhythm and is widely used in health foods. However, MT is sometimes added illegally and excessively in certain health foods, which might cause undesirable side-effects. In this work, an easy-to-use immunochromatographic assay (ICA) based on mouse monoclonal antibody (mAb) for rapid detection of MT was developed for the purpose of safety. Under the optimal conditions, the developed ICA exhibited a visual limit of detection (VLOD) of 10,000 ng/mL and a LOD of 50 ng/mL (strip reader) with the linear range from 50 ng/mL to 5000 ng/mL. Good correlation was obtained between the results of ICA and standard liquid chromatography (LC) in matrix test and blind samples test. The developed ICA can be applied for rapid detection of samples within 30 min, and is potentially an excellent tool for screening of MT in health foods.
