Simulated versus Hardware Laboratories for Control Education: A Critical Appraisal

Abstract: The traditional approach to control education in Universities has been to enhance student learning with hardware style experiments. The associated experiments are always constrained by the fact that hardware must be provided. Thus typical experiments use tanks of water, servo motors, inverted pendula etc. These experiments are good in so far as they go. However, quoting a former student, "It is a bit like learning to fly a Jumbo Jet. One has the choice to learn on real hardware (say an ultralight aircraft) or … Show more

“…Engineering education combines, in a balanced way, traditional lecture-style methods together with practical learning. The main advances concern the latter, because practical programmes not only complement traditional learning by allowing students to apply theoretical explanations to real-world applications, 27 but also give students a new role in the learning process. Actually, lab sessions scheduling based on students following instructions is no longer state of the art.…”

“…The cost of building traditional, physical bench top -based, teaching labs is very high. For this reason, a virtual laboratory concept is becoming an increasingly popular teaching & learning tool since it gives real-world simulated experiences to students in a university environment (Welsh et al, 2008). Several new teaching tools have been developed to enhance the teaching process and undergraduate students learning.…”

“…On the other hand, one of the recent concerns in engineering education is that it needs to be more design oriented and exciting to the students. A survey report shows that undergraduate electrical and control laboratory experiences need to improve [4]. The reason might be, in general, in most of the engineering faculties the same type of laboratory experiments are repeated that were designed long ago provided with necessary instructions [5].…”
