Simplification of local therapy of psoriasis with 8-methoxypsoralen.

Abstract: Local 8-methoxypsoralen black-light treatment was carried out on sixty-two patients. For the first time, oil was employed as a preparation base in order to increase the transparency and so the effectiveness of irradiation. Also the need for a descaling pretreatment was avoided. In investigations still being carried out, 27.5% patients showed very good improvement, 48-4% good and 24-2% unsatisfactory results of treatment. In many cases, less than fifteen irradiation sessions were necessary for clinical healing.… Show more

“…Trioxsalen, on the other hand, is topically more effective than methoxsalen (Fischer & Alsins, 1976). Both of these psoralens have been used as alcoholic solutions and in creams with fairly good effect on psoriasis but vdth uneven tanning (Hofmann, Plewig & Braun-Falco, 1976;Schaefer et al, 1976;Tronnier & Heidbiichel, 1976;Fischer, 1977). Fischer and Alsins (1976) used trioxsalen baths and dysprosium lamps, giving both UVB and UVA, with good results and no apparent systemic side-effects.…”

“…This preliminary study on ten psoriatic patients clearly demonstrates that in some patients (four out often) good therapeutic results were obtained using the monofunctional furocoumarin, 3-CPs. It is interesting to compare the therapeutic efficacy of 3-CPs after local treatment with that obtained after local treatment with 8-MOP, as reported by four different teams (Walter & Voorhees, 1973;Weber, 1974;Schaefer et al, 1976;Petrozzi & Kligman, 1977) (see Table 3).…”

“…Topical PUVA therapy has been less popular in the treatment of psoriasis and other disorders because it can produce intense, long-lasting hyperpigmentation. 21,22 Few patients will thank you for replacing their red patches of psoriasis with dark brown patches that can persist for more than a year. An alternative to using methoxsalen lotion for topical therapy is to compound it into an ointment or cream base.…”
