Trioxsalen bath plus UVA effective and safe in the treatment of psoriasis

Abstract: Seventy-four patients with psoriasis were treated using a trioxsalen bath (50 mg/150 l of water) and long wave ultraviolet light (UVA) given in an ordinary PUVA-cabin. Good or excellent results were observed in 92% of the patients in the initial phase and in 63% during the maintenance treatment. “…Our results confirm the good results previously reported from initial treatment of psoriasis with local trioxsalen photochemotherapy [1,2], The effectiveness of oral methoxalen and UVA in the long-term treatment of psoriasis is well established [3], Our results were at least equally good and thus show that trioxsalen baths plus UVA is also effective in the long-term treatment of psoriasis.…”

“…The trioxsalen bath plus UVA therapy schedule has already been described in detail [2], Therapy was given either daily (inpatients) or 2-4 times a week (outpatients), and the initial UVA dose was mainly 0.24 J/cm2. The therapy was continued as maintenance therapy in 139 patients (treated 2-8 times/4 weeks) over 1-23 months (mean 10).…”

“…In addition, female patients should still preferably avoid conception during PUVA treatment [7]. Although alternatives for systemic PUVA, such as bath PUVA and topical PUVA, are available, UVB therapy is also widely used [8, 9, 10]. UVB is preferred to PUVA during childhood and because there is no need for posttreatment eye protection.…”
