Simple deterministic modeling can guide the design of breeding pipelines for self‐pollinated crops

Abstract: Genetic gains delivered by plant breeding programs in the developing world must increase to deliver adaptation to a changing climate. Programs should be planned and optimized, with respect to gains per year and per dollar invested, as cyclic population improvement pipelines whose selection response is described by the breeder's equation (BE). We present a spreadsheet‐implemented model for the BE that includes operating costs. The model can be easily used to compare predicted selection response per cycle for di… Show more

“…BRRI’s breeding programs are being reorganized and accelerated based on optimization strategies derived from application of the breeder’s equation to breeding pipeline design (Cobb et al 2019 ; Atlin and Econopouly 2022 ). In recent years, BRRI’s project “Transforming Rice Breeding” reshaped the breeding programs to shorten the breeding cycle time, increase selection accuracy and intensity, and improve selection for breeding value.…”

“…In this case, the drawbacks involve the differences in the selection intensities used in each situation and the experimental details in the evaluation of progenies (Hallauer et al., 2010). The third alternative, more versatile than the others, would be to use the GS, also called the breeder's equation (Atlin & Econopouly, 2022; Cobb et al., 2019; Xu et al., 2017) to simulate the use of different strategies for conducting RS without considering the type of recombination. Thus, based on the GS estimate, predicting and choosing the best RS strategy for a given condition is possible.…”

“…Cobb et al (2019) discuss strategies for improving the selection process in autogamous plants. Additional comments in this regard were presented by Atlin and Econopouly (2022). However, in both cases, nothing was mentioned about recombination.…”

“…The donor tillers were put into an Erlenmeyer flask containing tap water and were covered with PVC bags to protect the tillers from intensive evaporation under the pre-treatment. The donor tillers were cold pre-treated at 10 • C for three to seven days [25,42,43].…”
