Significant Increase of Prostaglandin E‐Major Urinary Metabolite in Male Smokers: A Screening Study of Age and Gender Differences Using a Simple Radioimmunoassay

Abstract: PGE-MUM increases in smokers, as suggested by possible inflammatory injury of pulmonary tissue. This RIA method for PGE-MUM may be thus a sensitive and reliable biomarker for current inflammation, different from serum CRP.

“…On the hand it is not clear whether determination of RBCs count and all its indices concentration can be useful in diagnostic monitoring of patients suffered from allergic rhinitis who are encountered with cigarette smoking, Our results also revealed that immunity of male patients in some parts have more affected by smoking than female. Similar findings have reported by Hakim IA, et al and Okayasu I, et al in which some biomarkers were significantly higher in males than in females 26,27 .…”

“…21 Researchers have also used high performance liquid chromatography, radio immunoassay and enzyme immunoassay for measuring markers of cigarette toxicity in body fluids. [22][23][24][25] Non-invasive techniques (such as Pulse Oximetry based on absorbance at particular wavelengths) are also commonly used for measuring carboxyhaemoglobin and carbon monoxide concentration apart from classical measurement of these analytes in blood by spectrophotometric techniques. 26,27 Metabolites use in detecting smoking status…”
