Significance of Expression of Cyclin D as an Early Indicator in Dysplastic Transformation of Oral Mucosa in Tobacco Users

Abstract: To observe the expression of Cyclin D in transition of normal oral mucosa to dysplastic lesions and to find out the possible association of immunostaining in normal oral mucosa and different grades of oral dysplasia METHODOLOGY: In this cross sectional analytical study, total of 120 diagnosed paraffin embedded blocks were included comprising of 60 samples of normal oral mucosa (Group 1) and 60 cases of various grades of oral epithelial dysplastic lesions (Group 2). Patient's record files were reviewed for age,… Show more

“…The increased expression of COX-2 during oral carcinogenesis may depend on the developmental stage of the tumor, as well as etiologic factors such as the types of mutations and distinct types of injuries affecting different regions [22]. Few researchers reported prevalence rates of the cyclin D1 overexpression range from low-grade oral epithelial dysplasia to high-grade in all degrees of oral epithelial dysplasia [23] Similar results were observed in other studies with significant increase in the expression from mild to moderate to severe dysplasia [24,25].…”

“…Cyclin D1 is a proto-oncogene that is encoded by the CCND1 gene and is located on chromosome 11q13. It is a part of the molecular system that observes and controls the cell cycle during the transition from the G1 to the S phase of the cell cycle (Basnaker et al, 2014;Batool et al, 2019). Cyclin D1 is the first cyclin to accumulate throughout the cell cycle; it rises during the G1 phase but is not detected during the S phase.…”

“…Five of these had samples which were taken adjacent to OSCC samples, which are at risk of exhibiting a different genetic signature and possibly phenotype to traditional OLKs [17][18][19]76,77]. One was non-specific for keratin antibodies [78], and for another two, the methodology was not consistent with the aims of the paper (e.g., aiming to prove a new entity or validate a new technique [79,80]). Most of these studies found results similar to the trends found.…”
