The N‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl) maleimide (4‐HPM) modified waterborne polyurethane emulsions (MWPU) were used as surface sizing agents to improve the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers (CF) and epoxy resin matrix. Dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed the particle size distribution, storage stability, and thermal stability of the modified MWPU. And the surface reactivity of CF increased significantly after sizing. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of CFREs were tested, and the fracture morphology was observed. The result showed that a continuous and uniform sizing layer is formed on the surface of CF. In particular, the comprehensive performance and interfacial modification effect of the MWPU emulsion outperformed other samples when the 4‐HPM content was 1.0 wt%. Compared with unsized carbon fibers, the IFSS and ILSS are up to 71.30% and 30.81% higher, respectively.

The weak interface adhesion between high‐strength‐high‐modulus polyimide (PI) fibers and epoxy (EP) resin matrix has seriously hampered the application of PI/EP composites. Herein, a waterborne polyamide (WPA) sizing agent was used to modify PI fibers to enhance the interface adhesion strength between the PI fibers and EP resin matrix. The surface characteristics of PI fibers were investigated to determine chemical composition, morphology, roughness, wettability, interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and interlinear shear strength. The results indicated that the WPA sizing agent significantly enhanced the interface adhesion properties between the PI fibers and EP resin matrix with a 132% and 22.35% increment obtained for IFSS and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) compared with unsized PI/EP composites. Then, the hybrid sizing agent generated by WPA and waterborne EP sizing agent exhibited the highest interface adhesion with 168.65% and 28.62% increment obtained for IFSS and ILSS compared with unsized PI/EP composites. Based on these results, a sizing mechanism with chemical interaction and mechanical interlocking was proposed, which provides an effective and feasible method to enhance the interface adhesion between the PI fibers and EP resin matrix.

How to significantly improve the mechanical and tribological properties of polyamide 46/polyphenylene oxide (PA46/PPO) alloy is an urgent but challenging issue. The PA46/PPO alloy reinforced with polyurethane-coated carbon fiber (PCF) was prepared and characterized. It was found that the mechanical properties, heat resistance, and tribological properties of PA46/PPO were greatly enhanced by incorporating PCF. When the composite containing 40 wt% of PCF, the tensile strength of the composite increased from 82 MPa to 282 MPa; meanwhile, volumetric wear was 0.56 mm3, which decreased by 95% in comparison with PA46/PPO. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that PCF had a good compatibility with the polymer matrix, due to good interfacial interaction between the PCF and the PA46/PPO. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and laser Raman spectroscopy results further revealed that more graphitic carbon was microcracked to form a lubricating layer during friction process, thus remarkably improving the wear resistance of PA46/PPO.
