Short-term adaptations following Complex Training in team-sports: A meta-analysis

Abstract: ObjectiveThe purpose of this meta-analysis was to study the short-term adaptations on sprint and vertical jump (VJ) performance following Complex Training (CT) in team-sports. CT is a resistance training method aimed at developing both strength and power, which has a direct effect on sprint and VJ. It consists on alternating heavy resistance training exercises with plyometric/power ones, set for set, on the same workout.MethodsA search of electronic databases up to July 2016 (PubMed-MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Web o… Show more

“…Complex training is now recognized as an effective method for integrating strength and explosive power development [ 3 ]. Complex training generally involves the execution of heavy-resistance exercise (HRE) (1–5 repetition maximum (RM) strength) followed by a brief rest interval.…”

“…Complex training involves alternating between traditional resistance training (heavy loads) and plyometric exercises (lighter loads) within a single session [4,5,15]. For the complex training protocol, the exercise used for resistance training is the squat with an intensity of 65% 1RM.…”

“…Power has been considered to be an important factor in contributing to the successful performance of sport-specific movements [1]. Power can be developed through the use of many training modalities such as resistance training using a heavier load or plyometric training incorporating either acceleration and deceleration of body weight or a combination of both [2,3,4]. Complex training (CT) has been referred as an alternating specific resistance followed by a biomechanically similar plyometric exercise [5].…”

“…On the other hand, team sports, such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and handball, are complex intermittent games requiring the repetition of maximal or near maximal intensity activities interspersed with periods of low-to moderateintensity activity, thereby utilizing both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems (18)(19)(20). Traditionally, conditioning training programs for team sport athletes include anaerobic exercises, such as resistance, speed, change of direction and plyometric training (21,22). There is sparse literature examining the ICB phase of aerobicand anaerobic-trained athletes.…”
