We evaluated the effects of two dual-functional primers and a tribochemical surface modification system on the bond strength between an indirect composite resin and gold alloy or titanium. Disk specimens (diameter, 10 mm; thickness, 2.5 mm) were cast from type 4 gold alloy and commercially pure titanium. The specimens were wetground to a final surface finish using 600-grit silicone carbide paper. The specimens were then air-dried and treated using the following four bonding systems: (1) air-abrasion with 50-70 mum alumina, (2) system 1 + alloy primer, (3) system 1 + metal link primer, and (4) tribochemical silica/silane coating (Rocatec). A light-polymerizing indirect composite resin (Ceramage) was applied to each metal specimen and polymerized according to the manufacturer's specifications. Shear bond strengths (MPa) were determined both before and after thermocycling (4 degrees C and 60 degrees C for 1 min each for 20 000 cycles). The values were compared using analysis of variance, post hoc Scheffe tests, and Mann-Whitney U tests (alpha = 0.05). The strengths decreased after thermocycling for all combinations. For both gold alloy and titanium, the bond strength with air-abrasion only was statistically lower than that with the other three modification methods after thermocycling. Titanium exhibited a significantly higher value (13.4 MPa) than gold alloy (10.5 MPa) with the air. abrasion and alloy primer system. Treatment with the tribochemical system or air abrasion followed by treatment with dual-functional priming agents was found to be effective for enhancement of the bonding between the indirect composite and gold alloy or titanium.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to test the influence of selected base metals, which act as oxide formers, on the metal-ceramic bond of dental veneer systems. Using ion implantation techniques, ions of Al, In and Cu were introduced into near-surface layers of a noble metal alloy containing no base metals. A noble metal alloy with base metals added for oxide formation was used as a reference. Both alloys were coated with a low-temperature fusing dental ceramic. Specimens without ion implantation or with Al2O3 air abrasion were used as controls. The test procedures comprised the Schwickerath shear bond strength test (ISO 9693-1), profile height (surface roughness) measurements (ISO 4287; ISO 4288; ISO 25178), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). Ion implantation resulted in no increase in bond strength. The highest shear bond strengths were achieved after oxidation in air and air abrasion with Al2O3 (41.5 MPa and 47.8 MPa respectively). There was a positive correlation between shear bond strength and profile height. After air abrasion, a pronounced structuring of the surface occurred compared to ion implantation. The established concentration shifts in alloy and ceramic could be reproduced. However, their positive effects on shear bond strength were not confirmed. A growing number of composite materials are being used as an alternative for veneering cast restorations. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of UDMA based composite, restorative composite, and heat cure acrylic when veneered to Ni-Cr alloy and to evaluate the type of bond failure. Three different veneering materials were used: heat cure acrylic, UDMA based composite and a restorative composite. 10 samples were fabricated, each with heat cure acrylic and restorative composite and 20 samples were fabricated with UDMA based composite; thus, the total number of samples amounted to 40. All the samples were subject to shear bond stress fracture tests and observed for the type of bond failure. The greatest mean shear bond strength was recorded in relation to the UDMA based composite material when thermal conducting paste was used during the curing (10.51 MPa). The mean bond strength values of UDMA based composite without thermal conducting paste (8.92 MPa), heat cured acrylic veneering material (4.24 MPa) and restorative composite material (5.03 MPa) were significantly different from each other (p > 0.05). Samples veneered with heat cure acrylic veneering material and restorative composite material showed adhesive failure. Samples prepared with UDMA based composite veneering composite showed cohesive or predominantly cohesive failure. UDMA based composite veneering material when used with heat protection paste exceeds the shear bond strength requirement as suggested by Matsumura et al. (>10 MPa). A statistically significant association between the test groups and the type of failure was observed.
