SF6-alternative gases for application in gas-insulated switchgear

Abstract: The environmental problems caused by greenhouse gases have received unprecedented attention. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which is the preferred gas for use in gas-insulated switchgear (circuit breakers, disconnect switches, etc. for high-voltage electrical circuits), has a very high global warming potential, and there is a large international effort to find alternative gases. Recently, this effort has made important progress, with promising alternative gases being identified and tested. An overview, in particul… Show more

“…To reduce the use of SF 6 gas can be done by use of SF 6 gas mixtures. There are substitutes to the SF 6 gas which are satisfying all the requirements such as chemical, electrical, physical properties [3]. SF 6 & N 2 gas is observed to be good choice in particle contamination than SF 6 -CO 2 and SF 6 -Air mixture [5].…”

“…For the above reasons, much effort has been made to search for alternatives for SF 6 . Recently, C 5 F 10 O (C5‐PFK) and C 4 F 7 N (C4‐PFN) with CO 2 have attracted attention as alternatives gases for SF 6 . C 5 F 10 O (C5‐PFK) is in the liquid phase in the standard state, and its GWP is lower than unity.…”

“…However, there are little data available to study interruption ability of CO 2 /O 2 /C 5 F 10 O (C5‐PFK). Thus, a more detailed understanding of the fundamental properties of CO 2 /O 2 /C 5 F 10 O (C5‐PFK) is necessary for further progress in research and development of circuit breakers using CO 2 /O 2 /C 5 F 10 O (C5‐PFK) as arc quenching medium as well as other various gases .…”
