Sexually transmitted coinfections in patients with anogenital warts – a retrospective analysis of 196 patients

Abstract: Background and objectives: Anogenital warts (AGWs) are most commonly caused by low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types, and although they are the most frequent viral sexually transmitted infections (STIs), little is known about STI coinfections in affected patients. We therefore sought to assess STI coinfection rates in patients with AGW, specify STI coinfections and calculate the number needed to screen (NNS) for each STI. Methods:A retrospective cross-sectional study analyzing data sets from AGW patients t… Show more

“…Finally, the sexual dysfunction in HIV-infected men could be further enhanced by STDs recurrences, which are also directly related to infertility and subfertility [ 174 , 190 ]. Indeed, co-infection with multiple pathogens is common worldwide in people living with HIV [ 191 , 192 , 193 , 194 , 195 ]. Among these, several SDTs could lead to physical consequences, both anatomical, hormonal and neurological, which can further aggravate sexual dysfunction.…”

“…Despite the fact that the low-risk human papillomavirus types (6 and 11) are considered the main causes of the benign types of AGWs, the high-risk types (16 and 18) are linked to around 70% of cervical malignancies globally. 1,2 Most destructive therapeutic techniques traditionally employed to treat AGWs cause discomfort and have demoralizingly high recurrence rates. 3 However, due to their excellent safety profile and low recurrence rate, immunotherapies have received medical attention in the treatment of genital warts; therefore, the hunt for a novel therapeutic option is still ongoing.…”

“…Vaccination rates and willingness of girls and boys to be vaccinated against human papilloma viruses (HPVs) are also worrying: In 2015, the rate was 31.1 % for 15 year-old girls with a fully completed vaccination series in Germany [11], although numerous current studies underpin the protective effect of this vaccination against cervical cancer and associated anogenital tumors [12][13][14]. The incidence of cervical cancer in women was 4,380 in Germany in 2016 (10.5 per 100,000) [15]. In countries with HPV vaccination programs, the rates of anogenital tumors have declined significantly.…”
