Sexual Transmission of a Plant Pathogenic Bacterium, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, between Conspecific Insect Vectors during Mating

Abstract: Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus is a fastidious, phloem-inhabiting, gram-negative bacterium transmitted by Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae). The bacterium is the presumed causal agent of huanglongbing (HLB), one of the most destructive and economically important diseases of citrus. We investigated whether Las is transmitted between infected and uninfected D. citri adults during courtship. Our results indicate that Las was sexually transmitted from Las-infected male D. ci… Show more

“…CaLso is transmitted by psyllids to the plant host and among psyllids (Mann et al, 2011), but can also pass transovarially to the progeny of a bacteriliferous female. Hansen et al (2008) found evidence of transovarial CaLso transmission by B. cockerelli, detecting the bacterium in 20 of 25 eggs.…”

“…Psyllid samples were considered positive for “ Ca . L. asiaticus” when the CT value was lower than 36, a threshold used by others in conjunction with qPCR and the HLBaspr primers (e.g., Ammar, Ramos, Hall, Dawson, & Shatters, ; Mann, Pelz‐Stelinski, Hermann, Tiwari, & Stelinski, ; Sétamou, Alabi, Kunta, Jifon, & da Graça, ). CT values reflect population levels of the pathogen, with low CT values associated with high populations and high CT values associated with low populations.…”

“…Pelz‐Stelinski et al () found a small amount of transovarial transmission. Mann et al () found a small amount of sexual transmission, but only from infected males to healthy females. This is not too surprising, in that the best explanation of the results obtained by van den Berg et al () (see discussion in Halbert and Manjunath ()) is transovarial transmission of Laf in T. erytreae .…”
