Seventy-fold enhancement of light extraction from a defectless photonic crystal made on silicon-on-insulator

Abstract: Very high photoluminescence extraction is observed from defectless two-dimensional photonic crystals etched in the upper 200-nm-thick silicon layer of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate. Predicted very low group velocity modes near the Γ point of the band structure lying above the light line are used to extract light from the photonic crystal slab into the free space. It is found that light is extracted on a 80-nm-wide band along directions near to the perpendicular to the slab, with an extraction enhancem… Show more

“…Photons can couple to the overlapping local resonance mode and Bragg scatter out of the structure, thereby greatly reducing the amount of light trapped as guided modes. Moreover, high density of states near the stopband enhances the coupling of spontaneously emitted photons[36,37]. More importantly, there is enormous enhancement of 162-fold in PC ex-em , because its stopbands overlap both the excitation laser and the emission of the Nile Red, which can produce the doubly resonant enhancement.…”

“…Photonic bandgap (PBG) structure is reported capable of enhancing PL property of powder batch [6][7][8][9] with ordered assembly. In this study, a SiO 2 @Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn structure composed of silica particles as the core and coated with Zn 2 SiO 4 :Mn PL layer as the shell is demonstrated.…”

“…Presently we are attempting a fabricating scheme based on wafer bonding, which could result in a significant performance improvement. Another approach could be the integration into a photoniccrystal structure, in order to suppress in-plane light propagation [29,30].…”
