Service recycling and ecosystems: an intriguing similarity

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce the practice of service recycling. There is an end of life to every product. At this stage, recycling is one option: it is the process of converting waste materials into new products or raw materials. There is also an end of life to every service, which generally coincides with the end of service delivery. However, services are not made of materials or components that can be recovered or converted, so can they be recycled? If the concept of product recycling is… Show more

“…Waste reduction has become one of the main areas of scientific interest in industrialized countries. Due to legal, economic, and technical limitations, enterprises are looking for new solutions that would enable the reuse of products while capturing value in new ways [84]. That is why sustainability is part of solutions aimed at capturing value from used materials and re-introducing them into the value stream.…”

“…To date, the service ecosystem metaphor has been used to investigate the distinguishing dynamics of various service domains, including: health care (Beirão et al, 2017;Palumbo et al, 2017), culture (Minkiewicz et al, 2016), social media (Kim, 2016), sport (Tsiotsou, 2016), and recycling services (Mastrogiacomo et al, 2016). The ecosystem idea is especially fitting to explain the peculiarities of education services, which are characterised by strong interdependencies between different actors (such as students, families, teachers, service staff, public/private schools, universities, trade unions, local and national institutions) who deeply interact to enact value co-creation (Davis and Ostrom, 1991;Redding, 1991;Brandsen et al, 2014).…”
