Service chain modeling and embedding for NFV-based content delivery

Abstract: Increasing over-the-top video consumption endangers the sustainability of content delivery over the Internet. Internet Service Providers (ISP) face difficulties in competing on value-added services with content providers and Content Delivery Network (CDN) operators. In this respect, we propose a new model for the collaboration between content delivery stakeholders, so that CDN operators can deploy their software in ISP infrastructures leveraging on Network Function Virtualization (NFV). As the ISP network topo… Show more

“…One of the challenges in building the vCDN service is to adapt the service topology (CGs-vMGs-vSTRs-CDN points) to the ISP topology to lower the deployment cost. To this end, we proposed [15] an algorithm that uses heuristics to generate the service topology, then computes the embedding with a Linear Programming solver including both SLAs and ISP topology constraints. We use a cost function that minimizes ISP cost to produce the embedding of Services Function Chains.…”

“…Regarding VNF based optimization, collaboration between content delivery stakeholders and optimization based on SLA is investigated in [15]- [18]. In [15], a model for the collaboration between content delivery stakeholders is proposed. A high-level SLA is used for the negotiation of both computing resources and connectivity.…”

“…In [11], the optimal placement of composing VNFs with adequate amount of virtual resources for each VNF is formulated by bargaining game to allocate an appropriate set of VNFs for each CDN slice to meet its performance requirements and minimize the cost in terms of allocated virtual resources. In [15], a linear programming formulation is presented for the VNF embedding to increase problem tractability with a small cost overhead. In [17], a game-theoretic analysis is presented for different ISP-CDN collaboration models and optimality conditions.…”
