Serum Trace Element Levels in Tuberculous Pleurisy

Abstract: In this study, copper, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and iron were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry in patients with tuberculous (TB) pleurisy (n = 24) and in the control group (n = 20). Selenium, magnesium, and zinc were found to be significantly lower in TB pleurisy cases than those in the control group (p < 0.01, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). There was no significant difference in the value of manganese and iron between TB pleurisy and the control g… Show more

“…Diversos estudos relatam redução e/ou alteração de micronutrientes em doenças crôni-cas, dentre elas a hanseníase [23][24][25][26] . O desequilíbrio de micronutrientes pode gerar prejuízos à função celular, fisiológica e imunológica, sendo tais alterações associadas à causa ou à consequência de inúmeras doenças 27 .…”

“…ZIP8 is elevated in circulating peripheral blood monocytes during the acute phase response, which is associated with reduced serum zinc concentrations [ 86 ]. Similarly, circulating levels of zinc in plasma or serum are reduced in patients with active TB [ 90 , 91 , 92 ]. In time, zinc levels recover with antibiotic therapy in the absence of zinc supplementation [ 90 , 93 ], indicating that, similar to iron, the intracellular redistribution of vascular zinc occurs in TB.…”

“…We have evaluated the levels of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), and iron (Fe) in the serum of patients with (TB) pleurisy [13]. The significant increase in the serum copper and the decrease in serum selenium, magnesium, and zinc in the pleural patient may be indicative of an interrelationship of these elements and TB pleurisy risk (Table 1).…”
