Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease with many risk factors including inadequate nutrient intake and nutritional deficiencies, which affect the immune system, and influence leprosy progression. Objectives: To elucidate the relation between the serum level of zinc, vitamin C, and selenium and the clinical spectrum of leprosy. Methodology: A case control study included 100 leprotic patients (50 multibacillary and 50 paucibacillary) and 100 age and sex matched controls. Vitamin C was measured by ELISA, zinc was measured by using centronic colorimetric spectrophotometry, and selenium was measured by Inductivity Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy technique. Results: Zinc and Vitamin C levels were significantly lower in paucibacillary (mean ± SD = 89.86 ± 20.712 and 2.52 ± 1.27 respectively) and multibacillary (mean ± SD = 81.41 ± 18.61 and 1.98 ± 0.59 respectively) than in controls (mean ± SD = 107.34 ± 3.98 and 4.95 ± 2.45 respectively) (p value < 0.001) with no significant difference between paucibacillary and multibacillary patients (p value = 0.142 and = 0.066 respectively). Selenium level showed no significant difference between the three groups (p value > 0.05) (mean ± SD = 51.27 ± 42.61 in paucibacillary, 47.54 ± 30.21 in multibacillary, and 44.07 ± 46.58 in controls). Conclusions: Lower serum levels of zinc and vitamin C in leprosy patients may be a result of disease pathogenesis or related to the antioxidants based treatment. It might also present prior to the disease onset due to malnutrition that may have accelerated the development of leprosy.

Introduction: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae.This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological, temporal, and spatial dynamics ofleprosy in a municipality in northeastern Brazil. Methods: This is an ecological study on new leprosy cases in the population of Arapiraca (Alagoas, Northeast Region, Brazil), from 2008 to 2017. Data extracted from a national database were analyzed forepidemiological indicators, factors associated with physical disabilities, and spatialanalysis in the neighborhoods of Arapiraca. Results: A total of 292 new cases of leprosy were recorded, particularly occurring among the following groups: women, the age group of 46-59 years, brown-skinned individuals, people with less than eight years of schooling, and urban residents; the new cases were also predominantly the tuberculoid form and were of the paucibacillary classification of the disease. Almost 1/3 of the people had some degree of physical disability, which was mainly associated with the group 60 years of age and older, black ethnicity, and the multibacillary clinical form of leprosy. The joinpoint regression showed a stationary temporal behavior of indicators. There was a heterogeneous spatial distribution with active transmission areas, especially in the neighborhoods Primavera, Baixão, Ouro Preto, and downtown. Conclusions: The epidemiological indicators revealed complexity in the process of leprosy development. These spatial and temporal studies are relevant to help in the planning, monitoring, and guidance of interventions in the municipality. The spatial analysis showed heterogeneous distribution in the analyzed neighborhoods.

O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar a capacidade antioxidante total da dieta (CATD) de adultos e idosos com e sem hanseníase no município de Governador Valadares (MG). Trata-se de um estudo transversal com amostragem de conveniência. Os integrantes do grupo de infectados eram pacientes diagnosticados com hanseníase no Centro de Referência em Doenças Endêmicas e Programas Especiais (CREDEN-PES) Dr. Alexandre Castelo Branco da Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Governador Valadares/MG e os do grupo controle foram provenientes do grupo de gerenciamento de doentes crônicos da Casa Unimed de Governador Valadares (MG). As informações de consumo alimentar foram obtidas por meio de um recordatório de 24 horas e a partir deste, avaliou-se a CATD utilizando dados do ensaio ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Com o intuito de comparar as características sociodemográficas, condições de saúde e CATD de grupos de alimentos, entre indivíduos adultos e idosos com e sem hanseníase foram realizados os testes de Mann-Whitney para comparação de medianas e Qui-Quadrado ou Exato de Fisher para comparação de proporções. Todas as análises foram realizadas com auxílio do software STATA ® versão 13.1 adotando-se como nível de significância estatística 0,05. Foram estudados 79 indivíduos sendo a ingestão mediana de CATD de 7,86 mmol/dia. Os alimentos que mais contribuíram para a CATD nesta população foram o café, laranja, feijão e pão francês. Observou-se que a mediana de consumo de FRAP dos grupos de alimentos não diferiu entre indivíduos com e sem hanseníase, exceto para os grupos de óleos/gorduras (maior entre os indivíduos com hanseníase), das preparações (menor entre os adultos sem hanseníase) e das leguminosas/ oleaginosas (maior entre os idosos com hanseníase). Observou-se também que os adultos e idosos com hanseníase apresentaram uma menor escolaridade comparados aos sem hanseníase. Esse estudo apresenta uma descrição detalhada da CATD e principais contribuintes alimentares de indivíduos com hanseníase. Os dados revelam também, a necessidade de implementação de estratégias nacionais que objetivem a melhora da qualidade da alimentação desse grupo, com aumento do consumo de diferentes grupos alimentares e, consequentemente, uma ingestão de diferentes compostos com capacidade antioxidante, o que contribuirá para uma melhor CATD.
