Serum protein pattern during cow pregnancy: Acute‐phase proteins increase in the peripartum period

Abstract: Serum collected in a time-course mode during the pregnancy of a group of heifers was analyzed by 2-DE under various experimental conditions to optimize resolution of all protein spots. Changes in the levels of some components were detected during the last phase of pregnancy and early postpartum. These included a decrease of alpha2-HS-glycoprotein, an increase of alpha1-antichymotrypsin and, with a much larger and more abrupt variation, of orosomucoid and haptoglobin. These findings associate the weeks precedin… Show more

“…This correlation was reported by Elshourbagy et al (1985) in rats. The lowering expression of apo A-IV in cows until parturition noted in our study was also observed by Cairoli et al (2006). During lactation the concentration of apo A-IV in investigated plasma increased.…”

“…Thus, the transition period is the most critical time of the lactation cycle and can determine to a large measure how profitable the entire lactation will be. For this reason, many researchers have attempted to reveal complex physiological adaptive mechanisms using transcriptomic and proteomic methodologies (Madsen et al, 2002;Loor et al, 2005;Cairoli et al, 2006), the latter of which is a powerful tool for comparative analysis of complex protein mixtures based on high-resolution twodimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) coupled with mass spectrometry. This proteomic approach can provide useful information on temporal and dynamic processes occurring in the proteome.…”

“…Its level was elevated in the blood of cows after parturition (Piccinini et al, 2004;Cairoli et al, 2006;Bionaz et al, 2007), as well as in cows suffering from mastitis (Moyes et al, 2009), respiratory disease and stress (Aich et al, 2007;Cooke and Bohnert, 2011). It may serve as a non-specific host immune response to inflammation or stress.…”
