Serum lipid profile, oxidative status, and paraoxonase 1 activity in hyperemesis gravidarum

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate lipid profile, paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity, and oxidative stress status in the serum of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) patients. Thirty-six HG cases and 36 normal pregnants were included in the study. Serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apoproteins A1 (apo A1) and B (apo B), malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant activity (TAO) values and PON1 and arylesterase ac… Show more

“…Besides the inadequacy of antioxidant system, Güney et al 13 and Aksoy et al 15 have found enhanced lipid peroxidation markers, which are closely related with oxidative status, in pregnant women with HG than those of the control group. These findings are compatible with our increased disulfide levels and disulfide/native thiol percent ratios and disulfide/total thiol percent ratios.…”

“…Low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been received in HG. 15,16 Thus, Paraoxonase-1 which is a HDLassociated antioxidant enzyme was found low in patients with HG. 15,16 Otherwise lipid peroxidation markers, such as malondialdehyde and lipid hydroperoxide levels, were obtained high in HG.…”

“…[12][13][14][15][16]29 Several laboratory kits with different methodology have been developed for the evaluation of oxidant reactive species, non-enzymatic molecules, and antioxidant enzymes. [12][13][14][15][16]29 Overall, studies with different serum markers have identified alterations of oxidant and antioxidant status in HG, although some conflicting results have been reported. [12][13][14][15][16] Serum levels of TAS and TOS were investigated in patients with nausea and vomiting in only one recent study.…”

“…10,11 The relation between HG and oxidative stress has been evaluated previously but the results are conflicting. [12][13][14][15][16] Previous studies reported that in the plasma of patients with pregnancy-related complications, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase activities, and non-enzymatic antioxidant levels are decreased, increased, or unchanged. [17][18][19][20] Antioxidant activity has been shown to be statistically significantly higher in normal pregnancies compared to non-pregnant women.…”
